Radon Measurement Instructions

Short-Term Measurement

Short-term measurements typically last for 48 hours but can last a up to 90 days. For a short-term radon or radon decay products measurement you must maintain "closed-house conditions" for at least 12 hours prior to the beginning of the test and during the 48-hour measurement period.

Closed-house conditions are needed so we can measure the maximum levels of radon or radon decay products in the house by keeping the house closed so that the radon and radon decay products inside the house are not diluted by outside air. The following rules must be observed to maintain closed-house conditions:

1. All windows and doors must remain closed at all times except for momentary entry and exit.
2. External-internal air exchange systems such as attic & window fans cannot be operated.
3. Central air conditioning can be used providing it does not vent outside air into the house.
4. Evaporative or swamp coolers cannot be used.
5. Fireplaces cannot be used. You may use wood stoves.
6. The testing apparatus must not be moved or disturbed in any way. The equipment is not radioactive; it will not harm your family.

Long-Term Measurement

No special precautions are required for a long-term radon or Working Level measurement. You should live normally during the long-term measurement so the actual average radon or radon decay products level can be measured.
